Greetings, Van Life enthusiasts and Digital Nomads! Are you ready to merge work and travel by transforming your van into the ultimate mobile office? Perhaps you are a photographer or a videographer? Or, maybe you are a programmer or a social media influencer. Maybe, you are just figuring it out. Whatever your goals, having a solid mobile workspace is going to help immensely. Whether you’re new to remote work or a seasoned digital nomad, we’re here to help you create the perfect workspace within your van. In this article, we’ll explore some essential tips and tricks to make your van both functional and comfortable as a home office on wheels. Here we go!

Find the Right Layout for Your Workspace

The first step in creating your dream mobile office is choosing a layout that suits your needs. Consider the size of your van, the equipment you’ll be using, and your preferred work style. A desk or foldable table can serve as the perfect workspace for your laptop, and a comfortable chair or bench with proper back support is crucial for long hours of work. There are many configurations for a mobile workspace. Use tiny home design as inspiration for desks that are out of the way, when you are not in work mode.

Prioritize Internet Connectivity

As a digital nomad, having a reliable internet connection is essential. Research the best mobile hotspot devices, data plans, and signal boosters to ensure you stay connected wherever your van life adventures take you. Keep backup options in mind. Wi-Fi enabled cafes, libraries, or co-working spaces for times when you need an extra boost of connectivity. Be wary of free Internet services, as they are targets for hacking. It will always be better to have your own secured system. Our next article is dedicated to your Internet connection, where we look at better ways to get connected, depending on your needs.

Organize and Optimize Storage

A clutter-free workspace is essential for productivity. Invest in or design and build smart storage solutions, such as shelves, drawers, and organizers to keep your office supplies, documents, and gadgets in their designated spots. Rev-a-Shelf makes some interesting prebuilt sliding storage units. Check them out for ideas. Also, checkout tiny homes and the clever ways they use to optimize space. Remember: A tidy workspace helps foster a tidy mind! It sounds corny and trite but it is true.

Power Up Your Office

To keep your devices charged and your work flowing, make sure your van is equipped with a reliable power source. Solar panels and lithium batteries are popular choices for van lifers. Portable power stations is another choice, though not one I prefer. If your work is time sensitive, it’s wise to have backup charging options, like a portable power bank, or generator for emergencies. Personally, I always build my systems to charge the house batteries by three methods: solar panels, the truck’s alternator and/or shore power (when available). I don’t typically use generators, because they are noisy and too big to store easily. But, my work is not usually timely. Solar is a great way to keep batteries topped up, but the van’s alternator is usually going to charge your house batteries faster.

Keep it Comfy and Ergonomic

Long hours of work can take a toll on your body, so prioritize ergonomics in your mobile office. Choose a chair with proper lumbar support, and consider using a laptop stand to maintain a comfortable viewing angle. Granted, putting a real ergonomic chair can be difficult in a confines of a van office. There are some solutions. In one build I used a “leaning stool,” which allowed for sitting and standing. The table was also designed to be sit/stand switchable. It fit perfectly in the small space (see below left and middle).

If you are designing and building your own seating, research the features and principles of ergonomics and see if you can incorporate any of those into your seating. Sometimes having a passenger swivel seat (passenger side is usually easier) can be your most ergonomic choice. Just use a Lagun, or other adjustable table, positioned to take advantage of it (above right).

And, as in any workspace don’t forget to take regular breaks, stretch, and move around to stay healthy and focused.

Let There Be Light

Natural light does wonders for your mood and productivity. Make the most of your van’s windows or sunroofs to let natural sunlight in, and use curtains or shades for privacy and temperature control. Supplement this natural light with energy-efficient LED lights to create a well-lit workspace, even during nighttime or cloudy days. For energy efficiency it is always best to use 12 volts, where ever possible.

Personalize Your Workspace

Your mobile office should inspire creativity and motivation. Add personal touches, such as photos, artwork, and inspirational quotes, to make your workspace uniquely yours. Maybe some toy dinosaurs? Or, pictures of your loved ones. Plants are also a great addition, as they can help purify the air and boost your mood. Of course, you don’t want to clutter your limited space with a bunch of useless stuff. Pick small items that inspire you.

It’s a Wrap

Creating the ultimate mobile office in your van takes a bit of planning and creativity, but the end result is well worth the effort. By considering layout, connectivity, storage, power, comfort, lighting, and personalization, you can craft the perfect workspace to support your digital nomad lifestyle. Happy working and adventuring, van lifer!
